Research Interests

Low vision is any chronic visual impairment, not correctable by glasses, contact lenses, medical or surgical treatment, that has an impact on daily life. There are more than three million Americans with low vision.

Our research is aimed at understanding how different forms of low vision affect performance on important everyday tasks like reading, object recognition, navigation, and wayfinding. Two recent applications of this research have been the invention of a new eye chart, the MNREAD Acuity Chart , and a study of improved recognition features on U.S. currency bills.
